Chuck's Grandma Mac would always make us a huge noonday meal of all homegrown, homemade foods, except the bread.  On the corner of her table was a little plate stacked high with store-bought slices of plain white bread.  We kindly said no, thank you.  Transport yourself to India where they eat bread with their meals, too.  But this one, called Puris, is homemade.  Try this easy recipe and enjoy watching each piece puff up while cooking.

Mix together:

2 c. whole wheat flour

1 c. white flour

1 t. salt

1 t. shortening

1 c. milk

On a floured surface, knead until smooth and elastic.  Divide dough into 20 - 25 pieces and roll each into a thin, 3-4 " circle (or roll out entire piece of dough and cut into circles.  Heat oil in deep saucepan.  Fry 1 Puri at a time, turning once as they puff and rise to top of oil.  Remove and drain on paper.   NOTE:  This is delicious with an Indian lentil dish called Baji Dhal.  I'll include that recipe next week.
