Maple Avenue Ministries is pleased to share an upcoming opportunity for learning and reflection within our neighborhood. Dr. Derrick Bines, PhD, will be visiting Holland to deliver a lecture titled: “We All We Got: Self and Community Care are More than Buzzwords.”
Dr. Derrick Bines is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling at San Francisco State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oregon and completed specialized training at UC Berkeley.
Dr. Bines’ work is rooted in multicultural theories that honor the lived experiences of individuals. His research explores the factors that impact the academic and vocational success of Black and marginalized students—specifically the roles of mentoring, discrimination, and mental health. As an instructor and counselor, he is committed to creating inclusive environments and helping others think critically about how culture and identity impact our psychological well-being.
